C-Peptide, Six Specimens
Use
The C-Peptide, Six Specimens test is used to evaluate insulin production by the pancreas and to help differentiate between defects in insulin secretion and insulin action. This assessment can assist in diagnosing and managing conditions such as diabetes, hypoglycemia, and certain types of tumors. It can also be valuable for monitoring insulin therapy and determining whether the body's production of insulin is adequate or if there is a need for insulin supplementation.
Special Instructions
This test requires the collection of multiple tubes at different time points. It begins with a baseline collection, followed by treatment administration (e.g., a drug or glucose solution), and subsequent collections post-dose. It is critical to verify with a clinician before collection to ensure appropriate use of this panel. Patients should avoid biotin intake at least 72 hours prior to sample collection due to potential interference.
Limitations
C-Peptide results may be influenced by biotin supplements, leading to potential assay interference. It is necessary to confirm with the patient their supplement intake before testing. This test is not suitable if no treatment or dosage is planned between samples. Only intended for use as a series collection where a therapeutic agent or intervention applies.
