Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin), Seven Specimens
Use
Calcitonin measurement is utilized to evaluate thyroid function and diagnose medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), as increased levels can be indicative of MTC. It helps in monitoring patients for recurrence after surgical treatment. The diagnostic use of calcitonin stimulation tests with pentagastrin or calcium has been recognized, especially for early detection of MTC in individuals with familial medullary thyroid cancer.
Special Instructions
This panel requires the collection of multiple blood samples at different time intervals following a specific drug or treatment administration (e.g. glucola, pill, or shot). It's critical that you do not initiate this testing series unless directed by a physician, as it involves a specialized protocol.
Limitations
Calcitonin levels can vary due to several factors, including interfering substances in the blood, cross-reactivity with similar molecules, and non-standardized methods between laboratories. Thus, results should be interpreted in the context of the clinical picture and following all protocol details meticulously. The test's specificity and sensitivity can vary based on the methodology utilized, and values from different assay methods or kits may not be comparable.
