Chromosome Analysis, Chorionic Villi Biopsy
Also known as: CVS Prenatal Karyotyping, Chromosome Analysis
Use
Determine fetal karyotype
Special Instructions
Pertinent medical history and the test request form must accompany the request for chromosome analysis. The request should include the name, age, gestational age, and indication for the procedure. If prior Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) studies have been conducted, a copy of the report should also be included.
Limitations
This test's performance characteristics were determined by Labcorp and have not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This limitation highlights that while the test can provide significant insights, it may not cover all potential chromosomal anomalies, especially those that fall beyond the resolution limits of cytogenetic techniques.

Specimen
Tissue (Fresh)
Volume
20 to 30 mg
Minimum Volume
5 mg
Container
CVS transport tube (a sterile specimen container with transport medium)
Collection Instructions
Specimen is collected in a syringe (transabdominal) or catheter (transcervical) and transferred by flushing with the media from the sterile container back into it. Wash with sterile saline solution (NaCl 0.95%) containing sodium heparin (two to three drops of sodium heparin in 10 mL of saline) before transferring into the CVS transport tube using a sterile Pasteur pipette or fine needle forceps. Multiple pregnancy samples should be labeled and placed in separate transport containers.
Storage Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature and transport immediately to the cytogenetics laboratory. Refrigerate if sterility is questioned or if the sample cannot be shipped within 24 hours. Do not freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Suitability of the specimen is determined by the Cytogenetics laboratory upon receipt. No villi, frozen specimens, and specimens in fix cannot be processed.
