Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP)
Also known as: Ribonuclease 3
Use
Measurement of the level of Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) in serum
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
The performance of this test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. ECP's diagnostic utility is limited as its levels can be increased in other atopic and non-atopic diseases beyond asthma, such as allergic rhinitis and bacterial sinusitis. Its application is restricted to allergic-type asthma, and its correlation with lung function parameters is less reliable, especially in children with mild or moderate asthma. Non-serum samples, non-Greiner tube collections, and grossly hemolyzed or lipemic samples are causes for rejection.
