Use
This test is used for quantifying allergen-specific IgE antibodies in serum, which is useful in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis, and food allergies. It measures sensitization to common environmental allergens, which can help identify potential triggers for allergic reactions, aiding clinicians in developing effective treatment and management plans. IgE concentration levels are indicative of the likelihood of allergic reactions but must be correlated with clinical history and in vivo reactivity.
Special Instructions
Multiple patient encounters should be avoided. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible, ideally within two hours to avoid degradation of IgE antibodies.
Limitations
Concentrations of allergen-specific IgE may not correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin testing results when challenged with specific allergens. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with patient clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens. A negative test does not rule out clinical allergy or anaphylaxis. Allergen results with low concentrations (0.10-0.34 kU/L) are of uncertain clinical significance and are recommended for use by specialists only. Variability in allergen exposure, cross-reactivity between allergenic proteins, and individual patient factors can influence test outcomes.
