α-Fetoprotein (AFP) With AFP-L3% (Serial Monitor)
Also known as: Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) With AFP-L3% (Serial Monitor)
Use
The α-Fetoprotein (AFP) With AFP-L3% (Serial Monitor) test is primarily used for long-term serial monitoring of patients. It provides a color graphic summary report to help physicians track changes in AFP levels in the serum over time. Serial monitoring can aid in the assessment and monitoring of conditions such as hepatic cancer and teratomas. However, it is important to note that values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably, and results should not be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease.
Special Instructions
The patient's Social Security number must be submitted to monitor changes accurately. It is recommended that only one assay method be used consistently to monitor each patient's course of therapy. To order this test without the serial monitor service, order 141300. Ensure that specimens are refrigerated for storage.
Limitations
This test is not interpretable in pregnant females. Values obtained with different assay methods cannot be used interchangeably for serial monitoring. The results cannot be interpreted as absolute evidence of the presence or absence of malignant disease.
