Gynecologic Pap Smear, One Slide
Use
The Gynecologic Pap Smear is utilized for diagnosing primary or metastatic neoplasms and genital infections caused by various pathogens including herpesvirus, Candida, Trichomonas vaginalis, cytomegalovirus, Actinomyces, and human papillomavirus (HPV). It also assists in evaluating hormonal function through maturation index in vaginal specimens.
Special Instructions
Include patient's name, date of birth, Social Security number (or other ID), history of malignancy, drug/radiation therapy, last menstrual period (LMP), menopausal status, surgical history, hormone use, abnormal bleeding, and any other relevant clinical details on the test request form. Pap tests may be sent for pathologist review if atypical or malignant cell changes are suspected.
Limitations
The test may be limited by inadequate collection of cell populations from ectocervical, endocervical, or vaginal sites. Use of lubricating jelly or presence of starch granules can interfere with cytological examination, leading to unsatisfactory results. The test is not sufficient to detect a significant proportion of endometrial adenocarcinomas and might miss some endocervical adenocarcinomas and aggressive cervical squamous lesions.
