Gynecologic Pap Test (Image-guided), Liquid-based Preparation With Maturation Index
Also known as: Pap Test With Maturation Index, Image-guided
Use
The Gynecologic Pap Test (Image-guided), Liquid-based Preparation with Maturation Index is an important screening test used to detect precancerous or cancerous conditions in the cervix. It can also evaluate maturation index, which is a measure of hormonal effects on the cervical epithelium. This test helps in the early detection and management of cervical cancer, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.
Special Instructions
The test requires including detailed patient information such as date of birth, Social Security number, previous malignancy, drug therapy, radiation therapy, last menstrual period, postmenopausal status, among other clinical details on the cytology test request form. Special care should be taken to not use excessive lubricating jelly, which can interfere with the examination. Samples with suspicious cellular changes will be referred to a pathologist for review, which may incur additional charges.
Limitations
The test's accuracy can be compromised if a vaginal cell population is not obtained or if there is excessive use of lubricating jelly on the speculum, which may result in unsatisfactory Pap results. Additionally, the specimen must be collected properly and processed within 21 days to be considered valid.
