Use
Monitor exposure to iodine; evaluate for iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs), excessive iodine intake, or iodine in the workplace
Special Instructions
If a 24-hour urine collection is submitted, the test request form must state the 24-hour collection volume.
Limitations
Urine iodine levels can be influenced by dietary intake and iodine in medications or supplements. Caution should be exercised when interpreting results, taking into account possible variations due to non-clinical factors.

Collection Instructions
Instruct the patient to void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning). Screw the lid on securely. Transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory. Container must be labeled with the patient's full name, room number, the date and time collection started, and the date and time collection finished. Do not use preservative.
Storage Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
