Lactoferrin, Fecal, Quantitative
Also known as: Fecal Lactoferrin, Fecal Leukocytes, IBD-Scan®, Stool Lactoferrin
Use
An in vitro diagnostic aid to distinguish patients with active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from those with inactive IBD, as well as from noninflammatory irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Special Instructions
Specimen collection should avoid contamination with urine and sanitary materials. The stool should be collected in a clean, screw-capped plastic vial without preservatives, and refrigerated during transport.
Limitations
The test may not be appropriate for immunocompromised individuals, patients with a history of HIV, hepatitis B and C, infectious diarrhea within the past six months, or those who have had a colostomy or ileostomy within the last month. Fecal lactoferrin levels should be interpreted in conjunction with a full patient evaluation since other intestinal ailments, including gastrointestinal infections and colorectal cancer, may also raise lactoferrin levels.
