Legionella Culture and Legionella pneumophila, DFA
Also known as: Legionella Culture and Stain
Use
Determine the presence of Legionella pneumophila organisms by a combination of culture and direct FA smear of specimen, providing a rapid and sensitive diagnosis
Special Instructions
CPT coding for microbiology and virology procedures often cannot be determined before the culture is performed. Ensure the use of sterile containers and appropriate specimen volumes while maintaining the specimen temperature between 2°C to 8°C during transport.
Limitations
This test requires careful specimen collection and transport as improper handling can lead to the rejection of the specimen. Note that this test cannot be performed on swab specimens or inappropriate specimen transport devices. It is also crucial that the specimen arrives promptly as delays can affect the result.
