Miscellaneous Fluid Cytology
Also known as: Anal Specimens, Colon Wash Cytology, Cyst Fluid Cytology, Endometrial Aspiration Samples, Gastric Washing Cytology
Use
Diagnose primary and metastatic malignant neoplasms; differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant processes
Special Instructions
Ensure to include the patient's complete information such as name, date of birth, Social Security number, source of the specimen, any previous malignancy, drug or radiation therapy, and any relevant clinical information on the request form. This comprehensive data is necessary for accurate cytological analysis.
Limitations
Proper specimen handling is critical; improper labeling, fixation, or the use of expired containers can lead to specimen rejection. Specimens using fixatives with 50% ethyl alcohol, such as Saccomanno fixative, are unsuitable for microbiology testing. Additionally, frozen specimens are not acceptable. These limitations may affect the accuracy of the cytological evaluation and diagnosis.
