Oxycodone and Metabolite
Also known as: Free Oxycodone and Metabolite, Oxycontin®, Roxicodone®
Use
The test is used for clinical monitoring of compliance with prescribed opioids. Oxycodone and its metabolite oxymorphone are measured to ensure patients are following their medication regimen. This is crucial as opioids, including oxycodone, have high abuse potential due to their analgesic properties, and chronic use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Measurements help in assessing prescription adherence and managing side effects, as well as detecting potential abuse or misuse.
Special Instructions
Patients should not use gel-barrier tubes for specimen collection, as the drug is absorbed by the gel, potentially leading to clinically significant decreases in the drug level due to absorption over time and storage conditions.
Limitations
The test measures oxycodone and its metabolite oxymorphone, but it does not differentiate between other opioids or their metabolites, nor does it quantify potential abuse or dependence accurately. The results are predictive of compliance but are limited by biological variation in metabolism and individual differences in drug absorption and clearance.
