Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen, Urine or Cerebrospinal Fluid
Also known as: BinaxNow® Streptococcus Antigen
Use
Detects S pneumoniae in the urine of patients with S pneumoniae and in the CSF of patients with meningitidis.
Special Instructions
A body fluid culture will be performed if not initially requested for S. pneumoniae for antigen-negative CSF specimens as per the College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines. This ensures comprehensive analysis and verification of results, supporting the initial antigen detection findings.
Limitations
Testing for Streptococcus pneumoniae antigens is not recommended for individuals who have received the Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine within five days prior to testing, due to the potential for false-positive reactions. Additionally, the accuracy of this test in urine specimens has not been validated in young children, which may limit its applicability in pediatric populations where alternative diagnostic methods might be required. Consideration should be given to confirmatory tests to ensure diagnosis accuracy, especially in cases of suspected false-positive results.
