Thyroid Antibodies
Use
Differential diagnosis of hypothyroidism and thyroiditis
Special Instructions
This test may exhibit interference when the sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). It is recommended to ask all patients indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
Limitations
The presence of thyroglobulin antibodies may not be pathogenic nor diagnostic, especially at very low levels. The assay manufacturer has found that four percent of individuals without evidence of thyroid disease or autoimmunity will have positive thyroglobulin antibody levels up to 4 IU/mL. Additionally, samples exhibiting excessive hemolysis or those that are plasma will be rejected.
