Thyroid-stimulating Hormone (TSH) in Pregnancy
Also known as: Thyrotropin in Pregnancy
Use
Assessment of thyroid function during pregnancy
Special Instructions
Biotin supplementation by the patient can interfere with test results; thus, it is essential to inquire about such supplements. Patients should stop biotin intake at least 72 hours before sample collection. TSH values can vary significantly depending on ethnicity, with African American and Asian women generally showing lower values than Caucasian women.
Limitations
Test readings can be affected by supplements containing high doses of biotin, which may result in incorrect interpretations. The assay sensitivity is 0.004 uIU/mL and is considered a third-generation TSH assay. It is important to understand ethnic and pregnancy-related variations in TSH levels when interpreting results.
