Twin Zygosity Study
Also known as: Dizygosity Study, Fraternal Twin Test, Identical Twin Test, Monozygotic and Dizygotic Twin Diagnosis, Zygosity Studies
Use
Provide evidence that twins are monozygotic versus dizygotic. This test may be used for legal purposes, obstetric management, as part of a transplant evaluation, and for other purposes.
Special Instructions
Include race/ethnicity and gender of the twins in the test request. For legal purposes, appointments and paternity kits are required, and specimens must be collected with chain-of-custody paperwork. Contact LabCorp for a complete paternity kit or to schedule legal testing.
Limitations
The test provides a statistical assessment of the probability that twins are monozygotic, with an inherent small probability that they may be dizygotic despite identical results. The probability assessment improves by including the parents' DNA in the analysis. It is important to follow proper collection procedures as improper labeling, inadequate DNA on buccal swabs, or incomplete paperwork can cause test rejection.
