Achaete-Scute Homolog 1 (ASCL1) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Achaete-scute homolog 1 (ASCL1), alternatively titled hASH1 or MASH1, is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors. ASCL1 may play a role at early stages of development of specific neural lineages in most regions of the central nervous system and of several lineages in the peripheral nervous system. The protein has been shown to be highly expressed in medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer and may be a useful marker for these cancers.
Special Instructions
This test includes only technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. If interpretation is required, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation for a full diagnostic evaluation or second opinion of the case. The positive and negative controls are verified as showing appropriate immunoreactivity. Interpretation of this test should be performed in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist.
