Actin, Smooth Muscle (SMActin) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for identifying cells expressing the alpha-smooth muscle isoform of actin. It involves labeling smooth muscle cells of vessels, myoepithelial cells, pericytes, some stromal cells in the intestine, testis, and ovary, and tumors derived from smooth muscle cells. It does not react with actin from fibroblasts, striated muscle, and myocardium, making it a useful tool in identifying leiomyomas, leiomyosarcomas, and pleomorphic adenomas.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the immunostain and does not provide pathologist interpretation. For interpretation, order a full pathology consultation. The positive and negative controls are verified for appropriate immunoreactivity.
Limitations
Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and stability thresholds are antigen-dependent. The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors, potentially altering slide staining. Best practices include minimizing storage time after unpackaging, limiting exposure to humidity and heat, and avoiding plastics.
