Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) IgE
Use
This test is used for the quantitative measurement of IgE antibodies to Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in human serum. It is helpful for identifying allergies to Alfalfa, which is used in animal feed and consumed as a health food. The presence of specific IgE antibodies indicates sensitization to the allergen and may suggest an allergic reaction in a clinical context. It is essential in managing and diagnosing conditions like hay fever, asthma, or allergic dermatitis associated with Alfalfa exposure.
Special Instructions
Collection must be done using the specified containers: a red top or serum gel tube. After collection, serum should be centrifuged, aliquoted into a plastic vial, and refrigerated for transportation. Avoidance of hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus is critical as gross samples will be rejected.
Limitations
This test has limitations including false positives or negatives due to cross-reactivity with other allergens or IgE antibodies not measured in this test. The presence of other substances or medicines in the blood that affect IgE levels could also influence results. Environmental factors, handling errors, or issues in method precision might contribute to results that need careful interpretation within the clinical context. The test does not confirm the clinical presence of an allergy without correlating symptoms.
