Almond, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for diagnosing an allergy to almonds by identifying the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic symptoms. It helps confirm sensitization before immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to other allergens like insect venom. The test provides an indication of the immune response to allergens that might be associated with allergic disease.
Special Instructions
For non-electronic orders, complete the Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen. The specimen should ideally be serum gel, but a red top is acceptable. The collected specimen needs to be centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity. Results must be interpreted in the clinical context, as false positives can occur with markedly elevated serum IgE levels. Some individuals may have measurable IgE antibodies without significant allergic sensitivity.
