Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is an oncofetal antigen normally expressed in fetal liver, but not present in normal adult tissues. It can be expressed in yolk sac tumors and in hepatocellular carcinomas. This test aids in the identification of yolk sac tumors and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Special Instructions
This test includes only technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. The test should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as technical component stains will be canceled when ordered together.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors and may alter slide staining. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity. Stability thresholds vary among antigens.
