Amphetamines Confirmation, Chain of Custody, Random, Urine
Use
The test is useful for confirming drug exposure involving amphetamines such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, phentermine, pseudoephedrine/ephedrine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine, and methylenedioxyamphetamine. It is particularly important when the results of testing could be used in legal contexts, as it provides a chain-of-custody. This ensures that the specimen was always under the control of testing personnel, thereby limiting the opportunity for tampering. Amphetamines are central nervous system stimulants used both legally for medical conditions and illicitly, causing symptoms such as elevated blood pressure and acute psychosis.
Special Instructions
This test is specifically for situations requiring the chain-of-custody process. If a chain of custody is not required, alternative tests such as AMPHU should be ordered. The test includes the Adulterants Survey and Chain of Custody Processing as additional components.
Limitations
Over-the-counter medications such as ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine may be detected in the immunoassay screening, which may cause diagnostic confusion. The test is not cleared or approved by the FDA and is labeled as an Analyte Specific Reagent (ASR) product. Trace amounts of methamphetamine in amphetamine-based prescriptions can be detected but usually represent less than 1% of amphetamine levels. The detection window for amphetamine-type stimulants in urine is 3 to 5 days post-ingestion.
