Amphetamines Confirmation, Random, Urine
Use
This test is useful for confirming drug exposure involving amphetamines such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, phentermine, pseudoephedrine/ephedrine, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Amphetamines are sympathomimetic amines that stimulate the central nervous system and can suppress appetite. They are used medically for conditions like narcolepsy, attention-deficit disorder, and weight loss. However, due to their stimulating effects, they are often sold illicitly and abused, leading to physiological symptoms such as elevated blood pressure, dilated pupils, and psychosis.
Special Instructions
A Chain of Custody Kit (T282) is available for situations where chain of custody is required. Additional drug panels and specific requests are available; call 800-533-1710. If urine creatinine analysis or suspicion of specimen adulteration is needed, order the Adulterants Survey, Urine test. STAT requests are not accepted for this test.
Limitations
Over-the-counter sympathomimetics like ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine may occasionally be detected, which can cause diagnostic confusion. Additionally, submitting less than 1 mL of urine can compromise testing, and specimen substitutions are not allowed. The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, and its performance characteristics were determined by the Mayo Clinic following CLIA requirements.
