Amyloid A (Hepatic) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Amyloid A (AA), also known as serum AA, is an acute-phase protein. In the liver, AA is expressed on hepatocytes, with expression also observed in adipocytes. It helps in differentiating hepatic adenomas using a panel of immunohistochemical markers such as beta-catenin, liver fatty acid-binding protein, C-reactive protein, and glutamine synthetase. AA and C-reactive protein are overexpressed in inflammatory hepatic adenomas (type 3), but are not detectable in normal liver or other adenoma types. This test aids in the classification of hepatic adenomas.
Special Instructions
This test is technical performance only and does not include pathologist interpretation. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with Pathology Consultation (PATHC), as they will be canceled. If ordered as part of PATHC, immunohistochemical or in situ hybridization stains will be done at the pathologist's discretion at an additional charge.
Limitations
This test is not useful for amyloid typing. Interpretation must be performed by a qualified pathologist in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests. The age and charge of glass slides can affect immunoreactivity, with variation in antigen stability thresholds across literature. It is advised to cut paraffin sections within six weeks.
