Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Acid-Fast Bacilli, Rapidly Growing, Varies
Use
This test is crucial for determining the susceptibility of rapidly growing mycobacteria to various antimicrobial agents included in the test panel. Rapidly growing mycobacteria are significant pathogens and can cause infections ranging from pulmonary diseases to skin and soft tissue infections. Understanding the susceptibility aids in guiding patient treatment and care.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, the organism must be in pure culture and actively growing. In cases where organism identification is not provided, additional tests such as Mycobacteria and Nocardia Culture may be necessary and will incur separate charges.
Limitations
The test is designed to evaluate the susceptibility of identified rapidly growing mycobacteria. Incorrect or incomplete organism identification can lead to inaccurate susceptibility test results, as the drug panel selection is dependent on the specific Mycobacterium species. The test is not FDA cleared or approved, though it complies with CLIA requirements.
