Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Acid-Fast Bacilli, Slowly Growing, Varies
Use
This test is used for determining the resistance of slowly growing mycobacteria to antimicrobial agents. It helps identify the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of mycobacteria which are critical in guiding appropriate treatment regimens.
Special Instructions
Organism identification is required unless CTB or CTBID tests are also ordered. Pure culture of actively growing organisms is necessary for accurate results. Specimen source must be provided for proper processing.
Limitations
The test does not provide susceptibility data for ethambutol, rifampin, and rifabutin, as MIC data for these drugs show poor correlation with clinical response. Mycobacterium gordonae susceptibility testing is performed only upon specific request as it is considered nonpathogenic in most cases. Mycobacterium malmoense and Mycobacterium xenopi may pose growth challenges affecting testing outcomes.
