Apricot, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to apricots by identifying specific IgE antibodies in serum. It helps in defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms and confirming sensitization to allergens prior to immunotherapy. Additionally, it investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens such as insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. The test is not useful for detecting residual clinical sensitivity in patients previously treated with immunotherapy or in patients whose medical management does not depend on identifying specific allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies PDF. When ordering, ensure to complete and send the Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen if not ordering electronically. The serum must be centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial for submission.
Limitations
This test cannot be used to assess residual clinical sensitivity in patients previously treated with immunotherapy. False-positive results may occur in individuals with significantly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding, and the results must be interpreted in the clinical context. It's important to consider clinical manifestation and allergen exposure history when deciding which allergens to test.
