Aspergillus fumigatus, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus, identifying allergens responsible for eliciting allergy symptoms, and confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy. It helps in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. However, it's not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual sensitivity or in cases where medical management does not depend on allergen specificity identification.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen. Preferred collection tube is serum gel, but a red top is also acceptable. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies may not be useful in patients treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual sensitivity exists or in situations where medical management does not rely on identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results may occur in patients with exceedingly high serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
