Aspergillus (Galactomannan) Antigen, Serum
Use
The Aspergillus (Galactomannan) Antigen test is useful for aiding in the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis, a severe infection often occurring in patients with prolonged neutropenia, post-transplantation, or on aggressive immunosuppressive regimens. The test detects galactomannan, a molecule found in the cell wall of Aspergillus species, in the serum. This serologic assay can detect the presence of the antigen a mean of 7 to 14 days before other diagnostic indications appear, allowing for potential initiation of preemptive antifungal therapy.
Special Instructions
Avoid environmental contamination of the specimen. Send the specimen in the original serum gel tube, and do not aliquot or open the tube.
Limitations
False-positive results may occur at rates of 8% to 14%. Cross-reactivity has been reported with other fungi such as Penicillium and Paecilomyces. Foods containing galactomannan and certain medications can also affect results. The performance of the assay has not been evaluated for neonate serum specimens or non-serum specimens like plasma or urine.
