Avocado, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to avocados by detecting specific IgE antibodies. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, and is useful for identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes. Testing can confirm sensitization prior to commencement of immunotherapy and investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens including insect venom, drugs, or chemicals. However, it is not useful for determining residual clinical sensitivity post-immunotherapy treatment or when identification of allergen specificity isn't critical for medical management.
Special Instructions
Ensure the correct handling of the specimen by centrifuging and aliquoting the serum into a plastic vial. A specific Allergen Test Request form must be completed if ordering manually. Refer to the comprehensive allergen testing list for IgE for selection guidance.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies could result in false positives particularly in patients with very high serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Interpretation requires clinical context as individuals with insignificant sensitivity may show measurable IgE.
