Bartonella Antibody Panel, IFA CSF
Use
The Bartonella antibody panel is used to detect antibodies to Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). An infection with Bartonella henselae has been associated with conditions such as cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis hepatis, and febrile bacteremia syndrome. Bartonella quintana infection is linked to trench fever and bacillary angiomatosis in both HIV-positive and negative individuals. Diagnosing central nervous system infections involves demonstrating the presence of intrathecally-produced specific antibodies. However, interpretation can be complex due to low antibody levels in CSF, passive antibody transfer from blood, and potential contamination via bloody taps.
Special Instructions
This test cannot be ordered separately but is part of a profile including tests for Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana antibodies in CSF. Passive antibody transfer and contamination via bloody taps should be considered when interpreting results. The test is available for NY State clients and is performed Monday through Saturday.
Limitations
The test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. FDA. Crossreactivity of IgG between B. henselae and B. quintana may occur; typically, the infecting species has the higher IgG titer. Crossreactivity of IgM between the species is limited and often not observed. The test's performance characteristics have been validated by Quest Diagnostics Infectious Disease and used for clinical purposes pursuant to CLIA regulations.
