Bartonella Antibody Panel, IgG and IgM, Serum
Use
This test is useful for the diagnosis of Bartonella infection, especially in the context of a cat scratch. Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana are small, rod-shaped, pleomorphic, gram-negative bacteria. The human body louse is the proposed vector for B. quintana, with no animal reservoir determined. The domestic cat is believed to be both a reservoir and vector for B. henselae. Cats may infect humans directly through scratches, bites, or licks, or indirectly through an arthropod vector. Bartonella lesions typically appear as aggregates that proliferate rapidly, with significant disease symptoms in humans.
Special Instructions
Ensure serum samples are centrifuged and aliquoted into a plastic vial for submission. Use the provided Infectious Disease Serology Test Request form (T916) if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Normal serum IgG titers are usually less than 1:128, but 5% to 10% of healthy controls can show a titer of 1:128. IgM titers in normal serum are typically less than 1:20. This test was developed by Mayo Clinic in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements, but it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.
