Basil, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to basil by identifying the IgE antibodies responsible for allergic responses. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, confirms sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy, and investigates the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens including insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see the provided PDF document 'Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies'. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies might not be suitable for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists or in cases where identifying allergen specificity does not influence medical management decisions. False-positive results for IgE antibodies can occur in patients with significantly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
