BCL-2 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
BCL-2 protein is involved in regulating apoptosis, acting as an inhibitor. It is not usually expressed in reactive germinal center B cells but is significantly present in mantle zone B cells and T cells. BCL-2 overexpression in germinal center B cells, often due to a t(14;18) translocation with IgH, is indicative of follicular lymphoma, making this test useful for lymphoma classification.
Special Instructions
This test involves only the technical performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. Stains ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation will be canceled. Clients must use the technical components according to ordering instructions and attach specific labels to the transport container.
Limitations
Proper specimen preparation is crucial as nonformalin fixed or nonparaffin embedded tissues are rejected. Immunoreactivity can be adversely affected by the age of paraffin sections and suboptimal slide conditions. Environmental factors can impact slide charge and therefore staining quality. Best practices involve time management and limited exposure to humidity and heat for storage of slides.
