Beef, IgE, Serum
Use
The Beef, IgE test is used for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to beef and defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It aids in identifying allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes and confirming sensitization prior to starting immunotherapy. However, testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have been previously treated with immunotherapy for residual clinical sensitivity or in those whose medical management does not require identification of allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
Complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen if not ordering electronically. For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum, warranting interpretation in the clinical context. False-positive results for IgE antibodies can occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
