BET v2 (Profilin), IgE, Serum
Use
The BET v2 test is useful for evaluating patients with suspected birch pollen and peanut allergies, as well as those with oral allergy syndrome to other pollens or plant-based foods. The test measures IgE antibodies to the cross-reactive profilin, Bet v2, associated with birch pollen sensitivity and oral allergy syndrome. Presence of these antibodies could also represent a minor marker of peanut allergenicity and may indicate broad allergenic cross-reactivity with other profilin-containing pollens or foods.
Special Instructions
The test is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity. For additional allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. If electronic ordering is not used, complete the Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
IgE antibody testing results should be interpreted in the context of patient's clinical evaluation and history of allergen exposures. Positive results for IgE to peanut allergy markers, such as profilin Bet v2, are not diagnostic for peanut allergy. Clinical correlation with patient history is recommended. False positives may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE due to nonspecific binding.
