Beta-Amyloid Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for the identification of senile plaques in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Beta amyloid is a component of senile and diffuse plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, which are characteristic findings in Alzheimer's disease. Beta amyloid is also a component of vascular amyloid in the brain of dementia patients.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide a pathologist interpretation. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with Pathology Consultation (PATHC). If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Digital images of immunohistochemical stains are available if ordered electronically via MayoLINK, but not if ordered using a manual requisition form.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation. It is affected by the age of a cut paraffin section, as immunoreactivity can vary. Stability thresholds vary widely and are antigen dependent. Best practice suggests cutting paraffin sections within 6 weeks for optimal stability. The charge of glass slides can be influenced by environmental factors, which may alter staining due to poor slide surface chemistry. Proper storage and handling of slides are critical to ensure consistent staining results.
