Beta-Catenin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Beta-catenin is involved in cellular cohesion and intracellular signaling as a component of the Wnt pathway. In normal cells, beta-catenin levels are regulated by the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) protein. Alterations can result in accumulation of the protein and abnormal localization in the nucleus, acting as a cofactor in upregulating oncogenes. This immunostain identifies aberrant nuclear staining patterns in some tumors, aiding diagnostic evaluation.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only the technical performance of the stain. Interpretation should be performed in the context of the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. The age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and the charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors.
