Bile Acid Profile, Serum
Use
This test is useful for evaluating the enterohepatic cycle which includes the biliary system, intestine, portal circulation, and hepatocytes. It supports researchers in obtaining free and conjugated values of all 20 bile acid species along with total bile acid. The test quantitates all free and conjugated bile acid species but does not provide an interpretation.
Special Instructions
The test is intended for research use, requiring approval before ordering. Patient preparation includes fasting for 12 to 14 hours. Use Sarstedt Aliquot Tube, 5 mL (T914) for submission.
Limitations
Bile acid concentrations may be elevated post meal or due to bile acid therapy. Do not use this test for assessing general liver dysfunction in adults or for diagnosing intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.
