Bile Acids Malabsorption Panel, Serum and Feces
Use
The Bile Acids Malabsorption Panel is useful for aiding in the evaluation of patients suspected of having chronic diarrhea symptoms due to bile acid malabsorption. Chronic diarrhea can be a result of impaired bile acid absorption, leading to increased bile acid synthesis and subsequent secretion into the colon, causing irritation and fluid loss. This panel helps in diagnosing such cases, allowing for better management of the condition.
Special Instructions
For the most accurate results, it is important to follow specimen collection instructions precisely. Fasting morning serum samples should be obtained before 9 a.m. Ensure random stool is collected for the test when required. This test cannot be ordered separately, and patient preparation is critical for proper diagnosis.
Limitations
This test should not be ordered for patients currently receiving bile acid therapy, as it may interfere with the test results. It is also important to ensure that specimens are collected as recommended to avoid pre-analytical errors that may affect the accuracy of the results. Interpretation of results needs to consider potential interferences and patient history.
