Bilirubin, Serum
Use
The Bilirubin, Serum test is a crucial assessment for liver function, aiding in the evaluation of conditions that affect the production, uptake, storage, metabolism, or excretion of bilirubin. It provides essential information for diagnosing diseases such as jaundice and monitoring the efficacy of treatments like neonatal phototherapy.
Special Instructions
Ensure serum samples are protected from light during collection and transport. Patient's age and sex must be provided. Use the Kidney Transplant Test Request form if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Interference may occur if specimens are not protected from light, as this can cause degradation of bilirubin and affect results. Gross hemolysis can lead to rejection as hemoglobin inhibits the diazo reaction, resulting in false readings. Certain medications may lower serum bilirubin levels.
