Blackberry, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is used for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to blackberry by detecting IgE antibodies in serum. It helps define the allergen responsible for causing allergic responses and symptoms, and identifies allergens responsible for allergic reactions or anaphylactic episodes. Testing is also useful to confirm sensitization before starting immunotherapy and to investigate the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens such as insect venoms, drugs, or chemicals.
Special Instructions
For a listing of allergens available for testing, see the PDF: Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies. If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send an Allergen Test Request form (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have already been treated with immunotherapy to check for residual sensitivity, or in scenarios where medical management does not depend on identifying specific allergens. Some individuals may display detectable IgE antibody levels with clinically insignificant sensitivity, and false positives might occur in patients with significantly high serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L).
