Blastomyces Antibody Immunodiffusion, Serum
Use
The test is useful for the detection of antibodies in serum specimens from patients with blastomycosis, a disease caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. The condition typically causes pulmonary disease, manifesting as cough, pain, and hemoptysis along with fever and night sweats when inhaled. It may also spread to the skin, bones, or internal genitalia causing suppuration and granulomas, although primary cutaneous lesions are uncommon.
Special Instructions
The test requires the collection of a serum specimen and uses a Sarstedt Aliquot Tube 5 mL for storage. Proper centrifugation and aliquot of the serum into a plastic vial are essential to avoid rejection due to factors like gross hemolysis or lipemia.
Limitations
The immunodiffusion test is reportedly positive in fewer cases of blastomycosis compared to literature claims of 70% to 85%. It can yield cross-reactions in patients with histoplasmosis. Furthermore, a positive result is suggestive of infection but cannot distinguish between active disease or prior exposure.
