Bovine Serum Albumin, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to bovine serum albumin, defining the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms, identifying allergens responsible for allergic response or anaphylactic episodes, confirming sensitization prior to immunotherapy, and investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to insect venom allergens, drugs, or chemical allergens. The presence of IgE antibodies in serum increases the likelihood of allergic disease, while also indicating potential allergens causing symptoms.
Special Instructions
For ordering, the preferred serum collection container is a serum gel tube; a red top tube is also acceptable. Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial for submission. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request (T236) form with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists, nor is it useful in patients whose medical management does not depend upon identification of allergen specificity. False-positive results can occur in patients with elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding.
