Brazil Nut, IgE with Reflex to Brazil Nut Component, IgE, Serum
Use
The test is useful for evaluating patients with suspected Brazil nut allergy. It determines the relative amount of IgE antibody to total Brazil nut and specific Brazil nut component IgE antibody. This helps assess the potential strength and type of allergenic response to Brazil nut. A positive result may indicate sensitization to Brazil nuts or a cross-reactive allergen.
Special Instructions
The test begins with an analysis of Brazil nut-specific total IgE. If the total IgE result is negative (<0.10 kU/L), further testing is not performed. If the total IgE result is 0.10 kU/L or more, testing for the Brazil nut component, Ber e 1, is performed at an additional charge.
Limitations
Negative results do not completely exclude the possibility of clinically relevant allergic responses upon exposure. The test is not diagnostic for allergies and only indicates the potential for sensitization. False-positive results may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Cross-reacting carbohydrate determinants may lead to positive total Brazil nut-specific IgE testing.
