Cabbage, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing the diagnosis of an allergy to cabbage and identifying the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. It helps confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy and investigates allergic reactions to various allergens. Testing of IgE antibodies is not useful for patients previously treated with immunotherapy for determining residual clinical sensitivity or when the medical management does not depend on identifying allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For a detailed list of allergens that can be tested, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an Allergen Test Request form with the specimen.
Limitations
Some individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity may have measurable levels of IgE antibodies in serum. False-positive results may occur in patients with exceedingly high serum IgE levels due to nonspecific binding. Test results should be interpreted in the context of the clinical picture.
