Calponin Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is a marker for myoepithelium, aiding in the differentiation of ductal carcinomas in situ from infiltrating breast carcinoma. It is also useful in the characterization of tumors of smooth muscle or myoepithelial lineage. Calponin is a cytoskeleton-associated protein involved in smooth muscle contraction, expressed in smooth muscle cells of blood vessels and myoepithelial cells in normal human breast tissue.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain and does not provide a pathologist interpretation. Technical component-only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as they will be canceled if ordered together.
Limitations
This test does not include pathologist interpretation. External factors affecting positively charged glass slides can alter staining. Slides should be minimally stored after unpackaging, with limited exposure to high humidity and heat. Age can affect immunoreactivity, particularly in paraffin sections cut over six weeks prior.
