Canary Feathers, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for diagnosing an allergy to canary feathers by identifying IgE antibodies responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. It helps in confirming sensitization before starting immunotherapy and in investigating the specificity of allergic reactions to various allergens, including insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing IgE antibodies is not useful for patients who've received immunotherapy to evaluate residual sensitivity or for those whose management doesn't depend on allergen identification.
Special Instructions
Centrifuge and aliquot serum into a plastic vial. For a listing of allergens available for testing, refer to the Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies document. Include an Allergen Test Request form (T236) if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies may yield false-positive results in patients with high levels of serum IgE (>2500 kU/L) due to nonspecific binding. Clinical context is crucial as some individuals with minor clinical sensitivity might show measurable levels of IgE antibodies.
