Carbapenem Resistance Genes, Molecular Detection, PCR
Use
This test is used for detecting and differentiating blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP gene sequences that are associated with carbapenem intermediate or resistant results. It assists in infection control by detecting gastrointestinal colonization in healthcare settings of bacteria that are not susceptible to carbapenems using bacterial isolates from rectal or perirectal swabs. The assay targets specific carbapenemase genes to indicate potential resistance, aiding overall antibiotic stewardship.
Special Instructions
This assay should be used for testing bacterial isolates from Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. For direct testing from rectal swabs, order CRPCR / Carbapenem Resistance Genes, Molecular Detection, PCR, Rectal Swab. Additional organism identification must be provided for accurate test processing. Susceptibility testing is available through separate ordering.
Limitations
The assay does not detect carbapenem resistance mechanisms other than blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP, including other carbapenemase types, porin mutations, or efflux pump hyperexpression. It is not suitable for bacterial identification, and detection of gene sequences does not necessarily indicate viable organisms. Variants or alterations in primer or probe binding regions could lead to false-negative results. The assay was not evaluated for carbapenem-resistant anaerobes or other OXA-carbapenemase genes except blaOXA-48 and blaOXA-181.
